I bought a return ticket on the North York Moors Railway from Pickering to Grosmont (£25 ) on a sunny day in October. British Rail closed the line Pickering to Whitby in the 70s. N.Y.M.R. opened it has a heritage line to Grosmont, in the last few years it as opened all the way to Whitby. This trip was by diesel train to Grosmont. It is 17 miles and takes 65 minutes. Grosmont ( pronounced Growmont ) is in the Esk valley North Yorkshire England. Ironstone was discovered in 1836, this industry long gone. Network Rail train share a station, trains to Middlesborough. At the side of the present rail tunnel is the original tunnel built by George Stephenson between 1833 and 1853 as part of the Whitby to Pickering line. The first carriages to run through the tunnel were horse drawn and carried 10 passengers. Today i walked through the dark tunnel with faint lights to the Engine Sheds. Tunnel is 130 yards long and 10 ft wide. I saw the Coal Tipper tower loading the tender of a train in steam. I remember one of these Tippers in York when i was a youngster. In the Sheds the N.Y.M.raliways were restoring Engines ,among others a tram from Belguim. The village and station were preparing for a Wartime Festival next weekend. Flags everywhere. I saw a gun on a wagon. There are several cafes and one pub in Grosmont. There is a tearoom at the heritage station. Several of the roads have steep gradients into the village. Next to the railway crossing gates is the Grosmont Co-operative Society shop established in 1867, it is the UK s oldest surving INDEPENDENT Co-operative.--- The pub next to the station is "The Station Tavern", i enjoyed Triple sausage , mash and peas and a pint,].------The return train to Pickering was steam hauled, through breath taking scenery across the North York Moors.--------------------George Stephenson 1781- 1848 was an English civil mechanical engineer known as the "Father of the Railways" ---------------------------------A bus runs Whitby to Grosmont 6 times a day in October, the heritage train to Whitby 3 times in October, there is also Network Rail.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What a lovely trip. We spent a week in Pickering last year and loved it, but didn't take the train. We did walk over to the station and look at the trains but somehow it didn't fit into our schedule. We did do a couple train trips in other parts of the country while there.

Thanks for posting this.
